A teacher has lost her position due to her and her husband wearing a bikini on Howard Stearn.
News: CNN had a news story about a teacher that has lost her job, or was it taken. The teacher and her husband went on Howard Sterns radio and tv show and won a contest. Sounds ok so far right? The competition had to do with a husband and wife team where the husband ended up in shorts only, on tv, and the female teacher ended up in a bikini. There was never any nudity that we are aware of. It is unclear as to whether the teacher resigned on her own or she was forced to resign. She was not fired according to reports.
Observation: Ok, so where exactly is the problem? I understand that teachers are supposed to be a beacon of high standards, but why do adults who are obviously the ones watching this, maybe even the ones that forced her to resign. If children saw the Howard Stern show, I would have to ask where were the parents that allowed their children to watch this? I completely agree that when the teacher is at school is at school, she should be a responsible and upstanding member of the human race. However, what one does on their personal time is just that, their personal time. There was no nudity or sex acts. A bikini is ok and “legal” to wear. So why was she forced to resign. Because someone did not like what she did. People in today’s society need to learn to keep their focus on their own business.
Discussion: Should this woman’s personal life activities, that did not involve any illegal activity, cause her to lose her job?
Of course “personal actions can dictate your future”, that has always been the case and always will be. I would be really surprised if there were not a ‘morality’ clause in her contract just like there are in a lot of other professions.
Society has a say in what we do rather we like it or not, even if its just a “hey, should you really be doing that?”. I firmly believe that a lot of the problems we have in society are because we are being told over and over that we should be ‘tolerant’ and ‘accepting’ of things we should be critical of. I think we actually have too much of
Think about the number of problems that could be solved if people actually took an active interest in their surroundings. A simple ‘we don’t approve’ could go a long way.
For the record ‘resigned’ and even ‘forced to resigned’ are both choices the teacher made, even if it was so that she could go and get a job at a future date. If she wanted to she could have fought it, but a lawyer would have told her ‘you don’t have a leg to stand on, you signed the contract, you live with it.’
