Arlen’s Switch and the Hidden Problem

Posted by Nicholas on April 30th, 2009

I was reading Arlen Spector’s statement on switching parties (I pulled it from the Politico) and I cam across this statement

I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate

Think about that for a moment.  He represents the people of Pennsylvania.  In Pennsylvania the system says he identifies his party and goes before them for their approval.  Now that he doesn’t have their approval he is unwilling to be judged by the people, pretty convenient.  It also shows a bit of arrogance that comes from, I think, being in power a little too long.

Obama’s First 100

Posted by Nicholas on April 29th, 2009

So the general media theme seems to be that Obama’s first 100 days has been spectacular and that we all love him.  I think the Washington Post sort of put it into perspective though

According to Gallup’s April survey, Americans have a lower approval of Mr. Obama at this point than all but one president since Gallup began tracking this in 1969. The only new president less popular was Bill Clinton, who got off to a notoriously bad start after trying to force homosexuals on the military and a federal raid in Waco, Texas, that killed 86. Mr. Obama’s current approval rating of 56 percent is only one tick higher than the 55-percent approval Mr. Clinton had during those crises.

So, to get a lower approval rating (of 1%) the president would need to kill a bunch of people who didn’t want to pay taxes and follow through on his reversal of the ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ policy.  This is actually good news in a way as it means that people are not quite as in the dark about what the president’s (and the democratic congress’s) agenda is shaping up to be as cable news and the Internet are much bigger factors now than they were back then.  Following the Bill Clinton line (and note, I am not any sort of political analyst, I simply analyse computer systems), the Democrats lost the mid-term elections in 1994 (losing control of the congress).

If history repeats itself even a bit, maybe, just maybe, we can pull back from the abyss.

GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died…and George followed her, dying July 2008)

Isn’t it amazing that George Carlin – comedian of the 70s and 80s – could write something so very eloquent…and so very appropriate.

War with Islam

Posted by Nicholas on April 21st, 2009

I have never held the belief that anyone who gets elected president of this country is stupid as many of my counterparts on the left have done.  I must admit though that I think our newest resident of the White House is a bit naive.

I know, sort of, what the president means when he says ‘the U.S. “is not and never will be at war with Islam,”‘ and “We seek broader engagement based upon mutual interest and mutual respect,” (both quotes from a Yahoo Story earlier this month) but I have to wonder why he could not follow it up with saying something like ‘We cannot be aligned with peoples where this kind of thing still goes on’

The law, passed last month, says a husband can demand sex with his wife every four days unless she is ill or would be harmed by intercourse — a clause that critics say legalizes marital rape. It also regulates when and for what reasons a wife may leave her home alone.  (Times of India)

I might be misunderstanding something, but it seems that he is placing ‘understanding’ above core human decencies, and in many cases seems very anti-liberal (the Islam position on many things seems very anti-woman, anti-progressive, anti-everything) and to keep making statements like this seems very naive.

Hillary Clinton Siezing Pirate Assets

Posted by Nicholas on April 15th, 2009

From the Telegraph

Hillary Clinton unveiled a plan on Wednesday to fight piracy, calling for prosecution and freezing pirates’ assets with the support of Washington’s international partners.

I really thought this was a joke when I first read it.  People are siezing ships, ransoming them, shooting rockets at others,  and we’re going to sieze their assets as if they were common criminals.  I really must have forgotten that part of history class where Jefferson directed his Marines to arrest the Barbary Pirates and bring them to court.

Tired of Welfare!

Posted by Richard on April 13th, 2009

Personal story of my trip to Wal-Mart the other day. I stood in line and watched people on welfare purchase their groceries and was amazed to see the actual numbers. While in line I saw 3 people use the little American Flag “Credit card” that is the new welfare card. I only got to see one of the ladies total and what she had to pay, but it was amazing. Here are the stats;

Total Buggies of Goods: 3

Goods in buggy: Steaks, all name brand goods, Tide, Barrons Pizza, etc.

Total $ amount of goods: $494

Total lady had to pay out of her pocket: $131

She paid 26% of the total amount of her goods in her buggy and is eating better than I do. I buy almost all non-name brand goods and spend roughly $400.00 per month on food and other groceries. This is not right. We work hard and have to scrape to get by and these people get ridiculous help. This is another thing wrong with this country. Now they want to take more of the money from hard working people and give it to these types of people. BS, is all I have to say.

Did I mention she also bought clothes, purses, etc!

Thank you uncle SAM!

Green = Green Jobs?

Posted by Nicholas on April 13th, 2009

The government has been telling us that ‘investing in green will create jobs’.  If that were true, it would make sense to see who else was trying to make this work and see how they had made it work.  Makes sense to me, and luckily the people of Spain have tried it for us.

Every “green job” created with government money in Spain over the last eight years came at the cost of 2.2 regular jobs, and only one in 10 of the newly created green jobs became a permanent job, says a new study released this month. The study draws parallels with the green jobs programs of the Obama administration.

Now we have evidence that creating green jobs with government money will result in destroying jobs.  Why should we do this again?
